FanMail... the title of the album is a tribute to their fans who sent them fan mail during their hiatus.
TLC's third studio album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling approximately 318,000 copies in its first week of release, and spent five weeks at number one.
The album received eight nominations at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards, including one for Album of the Year, and won three. As of 2000, the album has been certified six-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
Release in February 1999, who doesn't remember the amazing singles off of this epic album? Listening to the album again it hardly sounds dated, old, or stale. Tracks like "Silly Ho", "Unpretty", "Dear Lie" could be released today, and "No Scrubs" is seriously an anthem. Even the intro "Fanmail" is excellent.
1999 was undoubtedly the year of the teen pop and dancepop takeover, headed by Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys and a alot of European imports. But it was also the year TLC sliced through it all with their third album, FanMail, which turns today 24. The LP’s electronic-meets-urban production was ingrained in futurism, and it embodied the impending Y2K era of digitization.
