Brandy Talks Depression & Suicidal Thoughts, Daughter Gave Her Hope

Brandy is opening up about feeling “super depressed” following her involvement in a fatal car accident and heartbreak from a failed relationship.

“I remember laying in bed super depressed,” she told People. “I [told] myself, ‘So, you’re just going to go out like this? That’s wack. You have a daughter. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for her because this is not the way to leave a mark in her life.'”

In 2006, Brandy, 41, was driving the vehicle that fatally struck a 38-year-old woman. The case settled out of court and she was not criminally charged.

“If Sy’rai wasn’t here, I wouldn’t be either,” the singer said of her now 18-year-old daughter. “The place that I was in, it just felt like I wasn’t going to make it through.”

The “Moesha” star welcomed her daughter with then-boyfriend Robert Smith in 2002, which she said “changed people’s perspective” of her. The pair split in 2003.

“But I had to focus on what was important, which was Sy’rai,” she added.

Earlier this month, Brandy revealed to The Post how her new single, “Borderline,” addresses the mental-health side effects of an unrequited love.

“I loved someone that was not available to be loved by me, and so that drove me crazy,” she said. “I wanted to use my music as a way to start more conversations about mental health and how that’s something that we all need to work on every day.”
