As an artist, Tupac Shakur reached the pinnacle of success. He is the undisputed king of the West Coast, selling more than 75 million albums worldwide to date. With his art, he expressed himself as a talented creator, activist and cultural icon.

Tupac Shakur would have been 51 years old today. His life was cut short when he passed Sept. 13. 1996 after a shooting in Las Vegas.

As we acknowledge the 51st Birthday of Tupac "2Pac" Shakur, we have compiled a list of 10 facts about the legendary rapper, poet and actor who still continues to captivate and inspire even to this day. 

1) In the Fall of 1997, the University of California at Berkeley offered "History 98: Poetry and History of Tupac Shakur" and became the first accredited school to develop a course based on the rapper’s music, life and lyrics.

2) Shakur's hit song "Dear Mama" is one of 25 songs that was added to the National Recording Registry in 2010.

3) In January of 2000, Tupac’s “Changes” was nominated for a Best Rap Solo Performance Grammy, marking the first time a Hip-Hop artist’s posthumously created work has been nominated for the award.

4) Tupac studied ballet and dance while in high school.

5) His mother, Afeni Shakur, buried some of Tupac's ashes in Lumberton, North Carolina on her farm there. The rest of his ashes were divided up between other family members and friends.

6) Tupac once dated global pop icon Madonna.

7) Tupac stayed at the home of actor Jasmine Guy while recuperating from gunshot wounds.

8) Tupac was a Versace model.

9) When Tupac was 12 years old, his mother enrolled him in Harlem’s 127th St Ensemble. He played Travis in the play "A Raisin in The Sun" in his first acting role.

10) In 1999, 2Pac’s book of poetry "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" was released. It featured work from the rapper and poet written between 1989 and 1991, some in his original handwriting.
